What are the things every woman should do before she turns 50? Try the following tips
Is the big 5-0 approaching fast? Or is it already knocking on your door? Then you might just be starting to look back on your life and ponder over all those things you have yet to try. If it’s at all possible and you are fit and healthy, it’s time to do something about it. Try to make your dreams come true, be it those you had in your twenties or the ones you have now. It will definitely lift your spirits!
Go travelling and see new places
Did you know that, according to research, people who spend money on experiences rather than material things are happier and live longer? Having a new car is nice, but it doesn’t beat exploring the world. So get going. Now! No need to travel half the globe – why not make a plan to discover at least five places in your home country you’ve never been to?
Learn something new
You never know what might come in handy one day. How about a foreign language, cookery course, pottery class or right brain drawing? Take up dancing, boxing or anything that will stimulate your brain. Use every opportunity to try out something new and interesting.
If up to now your lifestyle could be described as anything but active, it’s time to make a change. Once you hit the menopause, you might experience hot flushes, night sweats and, most importantly, weight gain. There is evidence that the metabolism slows down after the menopause which means you are likely to put on weight more quickly if you are not active. Exercise is also proven to lower blood pressure, stabilize blood sugar levels and strengthen the bones. On top of that, when you are physically active your brain starts releasing endorphins – happiness hormones – that trigger positive feelings.
Dump anything that doesn’t work
You might be afraid to take that step, but believe me, there’s nothing worse than staying in negative situations, dysfunctional relationships and unsuitable jobs. Trying to convince yourself that you “can’t do it” or “not just yet” is just an excuse. Remember that your life won’t last forever and that sometimes it is good to take that painful step.
Eat healthy foods but don’t beat yourself up if you slip up
Learning to eat a healthy and balanced diet will not only make you slimmer but your health will benefit greatly too. This doesn’t mean though that you can’t treat yourself to something you like now and then. Still, try to go for healthy options – swap the creamy ice cream for its curd cheese version or help yourself to just two dumplings instead of six. Fancy something sweet? Go for our protein bar.
Work less and keep your stress levels to a minimum
Feeling a bit like being on a treadmill? Always getting home late with no time left for your family or your hobbies? You are in desperate need of a change. Have you ever heard anyone who was nearing the end of their life saying: I wish I had worked more? Of course not. When coming to the last days of their life, most people would tell you they wish they had spent more time with their family and their loved ones. Try to find a way to work less, yet effectively. Is there really a need to give your job 1000% when 100% is just enough? Your career should always come second – after you.
Learn to use every opportunity
How many times have you said to yourself that you should have done this or that but the opportunity is now gone for good? Let this be a lesson for you to make use of every opportunity that presents itself to you at any given moment. Are you itching to go and see the band you used to love as a teenager? Go for it! If you learn to grab even the smallest of opportunities, you won’t miss the big ones that might change your life.
Learn to enjoy simple pleasures in life
What’s the point looking at other people’s lives and secretly harbouring feelings of jealousy of their happiness? The art of life is to learn to cherish the moments of happiness in your own life. Love yourself and look inwards for the source of your happiness. Learn to view your mistakes as lessons that can help you move forward in your life. It‘s natural to make mistakes as they are an inherent part of life. Learn from them and move on.
Forgive those who have hurt you
To forgive is hard, but it is only through forgiveness that you can move on with your life. If you’re holding on to old grievances and are not able to forgive once and for all, it is you who you are inflicting harm on. It’s of no use to anyone else. Forgiveness is the path to happiness. Just say to yourself that the past is now well and truly over and there’s no point in contaminating the presence with it.
