Have you stepped into the New Year with a slimming regime in place (which might be becoming a bit of a tradition by now), but discovered that the weight loss is not as fast as you were hoping for? Inevitably, your motivation is slowly starting to drop. Don’t give up. Have a go at our tried and tested tips on how to stay motivated and your dream of losing weight will finally come true this year. Easy peasy!

1. Spill the beans

Tell others – your family, friends or colleagues – that you have started slimming. Making a public commitment works wonders! You don’t want to make a fool of yourself, right? The thing is that once you start slacking off, your potential failure will get noticed not just by yourself but by others, too. You will find it much harder to explain why you are helping yourself to a portion of chips instead of vegetables or why your running shoes are still shiny and new.

Use your Facebook or Instagram account as a slimming diary to log your progress as well as your feelings.

 

2. Team up with like-minded people

It might be one of those days when you don’t feel like tucking into a healthy meal or doing your exercise despite knowing very well that you should.  A good buddy won’t let you down and your usual array of excuses will just fall on deaf ears. No matter how wet it is outside, they will be waiting for you at the usual place at the agreed time. They’re the one who will send you a photo of their latest healthy recipe, so you will be in no doubt as to what to cook tomorrow or you might feel inspired to send some of your tips in return. And how about coming up with a common goal? Why not challenge yourselves to a 5km run like our KetoDiet team did?

 

3. An important life milestone

To fuel their motivation, some people just need a simple goal like dropping one or two pant sizes. Others need to mark a particular date on their calendar. A special event date. Do you have one? It could be a wedding, your child’s prom night, a holiday or any other important day when you will want to feel great. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to drop a size by the time you celebrate your next birthday?

 

The best thing is that this key date won’t be your finish line. As the famous international fitness trainer Kayla Itsines said: “Exercise and healthy eating is not a destination, it is a journey.” Hence, the healthy lifestyle that you have adopted (or are just about to adopt) is likely to stay with you. You wouldn’t want to go back to your old eating habits and your old figure, would you?

4. Clear goals and regular rewards

Set up your diet plan in such a way that it consists of a series of smaller, realistic goals. Each time you achieve your goal, e.g. manage to lose 4 kilos, give yourself a pat on the back and reward yourself. Give the rewards a little thought - it should be something you will look forward to. Self-pampering works great – a beauty salon session, pedicure, massage or a new haircut. The ultimate reward could be giving your wardrobe a complete overhaul – you will need new pieces for your slimmer figure after all. 

5. Put an unflattering photo of yourself in your sight

Do you pay frequent visits to your fridge or pantry because you are feeling peckish? Stop craving the unhealthy temptations and tell yourself that 3 minutes of pleasure are simply not worth the self-flagellation that will follow. Or are you willing to give up your slimmer figure for them? The solution is either to stop buying unhealthy snacks and sweets or to use an unflattering photo of yourself as a deterrent. You can stick it to the fridge door, so each time you feel tempted by your cravings, you will be confronted by this unsightly image.

6. Investment that will pay off

Don’t waste your hard-earned money. It must have taken you some time to save up for a diet pack or a gym pass, so it would be a real shame not to use them as much as you could. However, if you still feel they are not enough to give your motivation a good boost you can invest in a slimming diet consultation with our experienced dietician. Or why not pay for the services of a personal trainer? Surely, you won’t want to throw away all that time and effort they have put into helping you to get your dream body. Besides, a consultation or a training session that has already been booked is just that bit harder to cancel than when you do the exercise on your own.

Did you know that you won’t have to keep yourself motivated forever? You will need it only until you have established a new habit. From then on, you will enjoy healthy eating and regular exercise as you won’t even be able to imagine your life without them. It should take only 21 days to form a new habit.
